What are the Lowland Games?

The Lowland Games are our community’s first step toward bringing a full-scale Highland Games to Vashon Island. Think of it as a preview — a lively gathering with food, drink, music, local vendors, and a taste of traditional Scottish athletics.

This year’s event is designed to be both fun and foundational. While you’ll see elements of Highland culture, the true goal of the Lowland Games is to raise the funds needed to bring the real thing to Vashon in 2026 — complete with Heavy Athletics, piping and drumming competitions, Highland dancing, and all the traditions that make the Highland Games legendary.

By joining us at the Lowland Games, you’re not just enjoying a festival — you’re helping to build something bigger. Every ticket, every sponsor, and every donation goes toward creating a full, sanctioned Highland Games that will put Vashon on the map as a destination for athletes, performers, and visitors from around the region.

Together, we can take this vision from a grassroots celebration to a lasting tradition.

What are the Highland Games?

The Highland Games are a centuries-old Scottish tradition that celebrate strength, skill, music, and community. Rooted in the Highlands of Scotland, these gatherings were once a way to bring clans together through athletic competition, dancing, and piping.

Today, Highland Games are held around the world, carrying on the legacy of Scottish and Gaelic culture. Athletes compete in iconic events such as the caber toss (flipping a massive log end over end), stone put, hammer throw, and weight-for-height challenges. Alongside the athletic feats, you’ll find the music of bagpipes and drums, traditional Highland dancing, and a lively festival atmosphere filled with food, drink, and craft.

We’re proud to bring this rich tradition to our island — blending world-class competition with local community spirit. It’s a day to gather, cheer, and experience the joy of Scottish heritage right here at home.
